11-17-73

Very cool--now we will have all three Playing > Uncle John's Band > Morning Dew > Uncle John's Band > Playing medleys in top-quality releases. I know some think 11-17-73 was the best of the lot, though as great as the jamming that night was, I think the top moments in 11-10-73 are more sublime than the top moments in 11-17-73.

And the GD Almanac also hints about 1969/1970 tapes that were "returned" and that may be released in the Dave's Picks series in 2013. I was underwhelmed by DaP 2 and 3, but 2013 sounds like it could be pretty good.

I just listened to the latest DL video to accompany the announcement of Dave's Picks 5(11/17/73). To elaborate on the returned tapes, DL said that they were from late '69/early '70 and some other tidbits. He said they are still cataloguing and copying the tapes now, but more info would be made available later. He said that this will likely be part of a Dave's Pick release later in 2013. What was more interesting is that he said that many of these tapes are shows for which they hadn't heard any previous recording(SBD or AUD) and where they didn't even have a set list...Definitely interesting.

Well it's about time it got released.

Lemieux sounded iffy about whether any of the newly discovered '69/70 stuff will be released next year. But it's quite possible that we'll not only see a previously unknown show, but that more of the "lost" material will be on the subscription bonus disc....at least that's what I'm hoping...

Segan's post mentioned it, but anyway, Lemieux just said that some previously unheard tapes from late '69-early '70 have been returned to the vault & they're going through them. He won't say what the shows are, but said we'll get more details in a couple months.
So, your guess is as good as mine.

I did a quick check of what appears not to be circulating (i.e. on LMA in SBD) from "late '69" to "early '70" and came up with the following:

- 26 Sep to 17 Oct '69 (including four Fillmore East shows on 26 and 27 Sep)
- Full Fox Theatre show 2 February
- 3 Texas shows from February
- Buffalo 17 March
- 3 of the 4 Capitol Theatre shows in March
- Full tapes of middle 2 Fillmore West shows in April
- 3 Family Dog shows from April
- Mammoth Gardens and Poynette shows from the end of April

This is your area of expertise though so I've probably missed things.

I did a couple "missing shows" lists from '69 and '70 a few years ago. There are some others in that range (particularly if you go into May '70), and what would excite me most are more April/May '70 reels...but at this point I'd rather not even speculate.
In fact it bugs me that the tapes went back to the Vault rather than being put into circulation by whoever had them, but we don't know the story yet. Anyway it means we may only get minimal information as to what's on the recovered tapes.

Shows like 11/17/73 are among the most important reasons why the Grateful Dead is and always will be my favorite band.

Sometimes it seems like you can throw a dart at Nov-Dec '73 and hit a great show, but this one is a really special performance that stands a little taller than most of the others.

Great news! I was just grumbling about the sound quality of the 11-17-73 SBD earlier this week (too boomy for my taste). Excited!

whatever became of all the tapes Stanley Owsley had? Plus all those reel to reels that "walked" out of the vault.

Btw, where is the GD vault? Is it now well protected, fire proof etc? I always hear about "The Vault" - lol

Great to hear! Never a problem with 73. Hopefully this won't get in the way of what they *should* do in 2013 which is the 40 year Anniversary Box Set of October 73!

Greatly looking forward to these 69/70 tapes as well. I wonder if a stereo version of 5-2-70 is included? Wishful thinking most likely! Regardless, hopefully some fun Dark Stars and perhaps an Alligator or two!
